This multi barb design has rounded catch & release barbs backed up by sharp snagging barbs. This means that you have the option of just sticking in the fork in far enough to engage the specimen with the catch & release barbs, and then if any time later it is trying to get away, the fork can be pushed in further to engage the sharp catch and hold barbs.
