The 3-D grabber has 5 fingers. As the device is moved towards an object to be grabbed, the 4 compliant fingers in the horizontal plane encounter it first. These fingers grip the object (such as a block) and hold onto it when the 5th finger, in the vertical plane, reaches the object and pries it loose from the surface it is stuck to. The block is now held securly and can resist ambient moments and forces from all directions. The block can now be transferred to a desired target location that is sticky enough to hold the block so it can slip out of the grip of the grabber.
